What are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a type of dermal filler that adds volume to your lips via fine needle injection. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can also help improve lip symmetry and address aging issues such as wrinkles and vertical lip lines.
Widely renowned as a highly safe procedure because the activating ingredient is a compound known as hyaluronic acid, which is naturally produced by your body.

What’s the First Step?
The first step to getting Lip Fillers in San Jose, CA is to contact our office and schedule your consultation. During this appointment, you will be able to have your questions and concerns addressed, you will be able to discuss your cosmetic goals, and you will be given a realistic timeline and pricing.
What to Expect on the Day of Lip Fillers
When you come into our office, your procedure will begin by having a topical anesthetic applied to your lips. When applied, it will numb your lips so you won’t feel any pain and have a very comfortable procedure. For our patients with a BLT allergy, a nerve block injection can be utilized to numb their lips. An ice pack can also be applied to your lips throughout the procedure to minimize swelling and bruising.
The technician will then use a thin needle to inject the lip filler into any or all parts of your lips: which include the edges of your lips (vermillion border), the curve in the center of your upper lip (Cupid’s bow), and the corners of your mouth (oral commissures). Although the procedure isn’t painful, you may feel a pinching sensation, which can cause certain patients’ eyes to water.
On average, 1 milliliter (mL) (or about 1/5 of a teaspoon) of lip filler will be injected into your lips, with the needle not going deeper than 2.5 millimeters (mm) into your skin.
The entire procedure may take as little as 30 minutes or as long as two hours.
Lip Fillers Recovery
Once you are finished with your procedure, the technician will gently massage your lips to help absorb the filler, along with using ice on your lips as well to prevent excessive swelling.
You will be monitored for up to 15 minutes just to make sure you’re not experiencing any side effects. After your technician feels you are responding well to the lip fillers, you will be able to leave. Although a local anesthetic won’t make you tired or groggy, you may choose to have a family member or friend drive you home just in case.
During the first 24-48 hours, your lips may be swollen, sensitive, and bruised. Although rare, these reactions can last up to a week. To help encourage a healthy recovery, we suggest:
- Gently apply an ice pack for up to 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling.
- Avoid wearing lipstick, lip balm, or any other product on your lips for at least 24 hours.
- Refrain from touching or puckering your lips, including kissing and sipping from a straw.
- Be careful brushing your teeth.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Avoid exercising for at least 24 hours
After about two weeks, you may be asked to return for a check-up to monitor your lips. During this appointment, pictures may be taken for your medical record so you can witness the changes.
