Wrinkles and deep lines are only part of the story when it comes to aging. Our faces lose volume as well, in our cheeks, jawline, forehead, and temples. Many people, however, aren’t ready for an invasive procedure such as a facelift to restore a youthful appearance. That’s why dermal fillers such as Restylane® are so popular for San Francisco Bay Area residents seeking a non-surgical option for facial rejuvenation.
Dermal fillers, when injected by a board-certified facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. Chase Lay in San Jose, can achieve excellent results for most patients. Please request a consultation online, or call Dr. Lay’s office at (408) 728-8887 to schedule an appointment to learn more about your options.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?
We all experience the effects of aging: thinner skin that looks less plump and smooth than it did when we were younger. In other words, most men and women are good candidates for fillers. Dermal fillers are safe and designed to treat various issues that cause us to appear older than we feel. Most patients who come in for fillers are as young as 30 years old and either want to soften nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of your mouth) or vertical lip lines, or increase the volume in their cheeks.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dr. Lay offers a number of different fillers, which each offer unique advantages for certain patients. The versatility is needed to treat lines at wrinkles at various depths. Most fillers used these days use hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in your body. Since it’s not made using animal sources, allergy testing isn’t needed prior to your treatment. Other, heavier, fillers use a compound called Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) that’s found naturally in bones.

What Should I Expect?
Filler injections are quick in-office treatments that can be done in less than 30 minutes in many cases. Dr. Lay will assess your skin tone and listen to your cosmetic goals, then map specific points for the injections based on those goals. After completing the injections you will be offered an ice-pack to relieve any minor discomfort. Swelling, redness, and sometimes minor bruising are typical reactions. Dr. Lay doesn’t recommend getting injections before important social or professional events because certain areas of the face are more prone to bruising than others.
