Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin are neurotoxins that reduce muscle contraction strength in the areas that they are injected such as the crow’s feet or frown lines which reduces the formation of lines. You can also take a square or round face and make it more oval or V-shaped using Botox or Dysport. Using Botox or Dysport for jaw reduction is a very effective treatment to create a more oval or V-shaped face. The way it works is by relaxing or weakening the masseter muscle that overlies the lateral side of the mandible. As the muscle weakens it becomes smaller and the face becomes less square and more V-shaped or heart-shaped. Most patients are affectively treated with as little as 50 to 70 units. That is anywhere from 25-35 units per side. In my own office I charge a bit less per unit of Botox when I am using 50 or more units per treatment. Most patients only need this treatment 1-2 times per year because the effects can last up to 6 or 7 months. The treatment takes just a few minutes and there is no down time. You can return to work and other social activities right away.
