Chin Implants

Chin augmentation is among the most satisfying procedures for both Dr. Lay and his patients. Men or women who believe they have “weak” chins are often self-conscious about the impression other people have of their appearances. In some cases women feel the chin is too square and would like something more refined and feminine to create a more oval face. Chin augmentation is rapidly becoming more popular because the changes can be dramatic, without seeming unnatural. Although combining neck liposuction with chin implants is often an excellent way to contour the jawline and neck even more, chin augmentation alone is sometimes the only procedure needed to create a balanced relationship between facial structures.

In a maturing face, chin enhancement restores the framework that supports and lifts the skin and tissues. Chin implants and chin augmentation can result in changes ranging from subtle to dramatic.  In either case, virtually all patients take a little time to adjust to their new appearance.

Real Answers From Dr. Lay

“If you’ve got a full or short neck and are thinking about a face lift or neck lift, you might actually be better off with chin enhancement or a chin implant. Either procedure can provide the illusion of a longer neck and improve your profile with less down time than a face lift or neck lift.”

There are various ways to improve the chin’s contour:

Chin Implant:  An appropriate implant can redefine the jawline and give a pleasing height and projection to the chin. Dr. Lay makes a small incision either under the chin or inside the mouth between the lower lip and gum line. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the intra-oral route has a slightly higher risk of infection and a prolonged healing time compared to the incision under the chin. The incision under the chin takes 7 to 10 days to heal but is imperceptible once completely matured.  This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia.

Genioplasty with osteotomies:   Dr. Lay carefully alters the bone of the chin and jaw, repositioning it to a new, more aesthetically pleasing position.

Dr. Lay is board-certified and experienced in both Facial Plastic Surgery and Oral Surgery. During your consultation, he can assess your bone structure and recommend the best approach in your individual case.

Cheek Implants

People with hollowed-out cheeks often look older than they actually are, and many individuals simply feel that their cheekbones could use more definition. Flexible synthetic implants can restore or add volume to your cheeks. Dr. Lay also uses cheek implants for patients who have suffered a traumatic facial injury.

Incisions are usually made inside the mouth above the upper gum line. Depending on the implants’ size, they can be inserted through a small incision via the lower eyelids. Healing times range from 5 to 10 days, depending on the approach and your individual health. Residual swelling can remain for up to 3 weeks in some cases.

Lip Augmentation

Accenting the borders of your lips and providing a bit of volume for a sexy, natural look is a specialty of Dr. Lay’s. Nobody wants lips that look unnaturally swollen. Dermal fillers such as Restylane® or BELOTERO BALANCE® are usually the best approach to achieving the look you want. There is almost no risk and if you aren’t happy with the look, fillers can be quickly melted with an enzyme.

Some lips, however, require a little more volume and you may consider a soft silicone implant such as the PermaLip™ implant. These implants are easily placed in the clinic using local anesthetic, and have the advantage of looking and feeling very natural. An additional advantage of the PermaLip implant is that its smooth texture allows it to be easily removed should the patient feel it is oversized or undersized or simply wants it removed. Fortunately this occurs very rarely.
